History of Duke University Basketball

 College basketball has been one of the most exciting sports in college history for a very long time. Just like in every other sport there are rivalries, top teams, best coaches, and more. Well one of the most talked about college basketball teams in the history of the sport is Duke University. This program is located in Durham, North Carolina. They have had 119 seasons starting in 1905 until 2023. Through that time Duke has an overall record of 2278-923, 23-time regular season conference champion, 27-time tournament conference champion, 17 final fours in the big tournament, and an astounding 5 Ncaa championships. The 5 championships came in the years of 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, and 2015. This brings me into the introduction of one of college basketball's most famous coaches ever: Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K). In almost every sport there are certain players, teams, and coaches who have some type of conflict causing a rivalry between programs. For Duke University's Basketball program, it almost seems as if every game is a rivalry for them because of the hate the program gets. Being one of the most successful teams in college sports can be fun sometimes; however, the other side of that comes with lots of teams and fans wanting to take down a high achieving team such as Duke. In college basketball there are the 'Blue Bloods' which include: Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Ucla, and UNC. All of these teams become rivals in the sense of who is the best 'blue blood'; however, for Duke the biggest rival they have had for the longest time in college basketball would be the University of North Carolina Tar Heel.  With every great sports program comes great players throughout the years of the game. Well for a highly successful team such as Duke; there have been many players to come through the program and change the game of basketball forever. One of the many outstanding players to name on this very long list would be Christian Laettner who played for Duke during the time of 1889-1892. Laettner won two nation titles in 1991 and 1992, he is third all-time in Duke basketball points, and so much more. Despite Laettner being one of the most talented players to ever be a part of Duke; he was also one of the most hated players in college basketball because of his scrappy and intense play that people would consider to be "dirty playing".
